Introduction:
Drawing on the illustrious history of the great panorama paintings
of the 18th and 19th centuries, The Velaslavasay Panorama is
an exhibition hall, theatre and garden dedicated to the production
and presentation of unusual visual experiences, including those
of the 360- degree variety. The Velaslavasay Panorama panoramic
exhibition, when completed, will encircle the spectator with
a fully enveloping atmosphere; the vast painting, of a continuous
surrounding landscape, accompanied by soundscape composition
and a three-dimensional element, will afford the viewer an opportunity
to experience a complete sensory phenomenon.
Historically, the panorama was an immersive 360-degrees painted
environment,often including a three-dimensional faux terrain
in the foreground of the painting to enhance the illusion. An
early relative to the motion picture, the captivated public
would visit these paintings-in-the-round as an entertainment
or novelty, much along the same lines as the cinema is seen
today.
Located in the West Adams Historic District, The Velaslavasay
Panorama presents to the community an art form that has been
all but lost due to the technological advancements of our time,
and the differing ways in which the public consumes mass entertainment.
Devoted to the continued production of things reminiscent of
this landmark era in media's history, The Velaslavasay Panorama
is indeed proud to exist and participate in the cultural artistic
identity of the city of Los Angeles, known the world over as
an entertainment capital, and the center of magnetic showmanship
and spectacle

Über die Soundinstallation
für das Panorama:
Die Soundinstallation für das Velaslavasay Panorama ist
ein Acht-Kanal-System-Aufbau, der in die Gemäldekonstruktion
integriert ist. Ausgehend von der Idee, dass Sound nicht nur
der Beschallung dienen, sondern ein als ein Element eingesetzt,
mit Hilfe dessen Raum gestaltet und wahrnehmbar gemacht werden
kann, wurde die Installation speziell für dieses Panorama
entworfen und realisiert.
Das Velaslavasay Panorama stellt mit seinem kreisrunden Aufbau
eine ganz besondere Form von Raum dar, die im Grunde dem typischen
Aufbau eines Acht-Kanal-Systems mit der optimalen Hörposition
in der Mitte des Kreises entspricht. In diesem Panoramagemälde,
das den Besucher thematisch in eine zum Teil abstrakte arktische
Landschaft versetzt, wird der Sound Teil der Illusion. Der allumfassende
Bildeindruck, das Empfinden von Perspektive und die Interaktion
mit dem Gemälde durch die Bewegung des eigenen Körpers
werden durch den Sound unterstützt, verstärkt und
erweitert. Die Lautsprecher sind nicht direkt auf den Betrachter
gerichtet, sondern auf das Bild, so dass sich der Sound von
dieser Oberfläche reflektiert im Raum verteilen und bewegen
kann.
Mit Bezug zum Thema des Gemäldes sind Klänge und Geräusche
natürlichen und künstlichen Ursprungs hörbar,
die die arktische Landschaft auditiv erfahrbar machen. Dabei
ist eine arktische Landschaft klanglich ein äußert
interessanter Ort – vor allem von Forschern oder Abenteurern
besucht, scheint es kaum Anhaltspunkte zu geben, wie diese klingen
könnte: Mit diesem Phänomen beschäftigt sich
die Soundinstallation für das Velaslavasay Panorama. Sie
ist keine Simulation einer realen arktischen Klanglandschaft,
sondern erweitert die Panorama-Konstruktion aus Bild, Licht
und installativen Elementen um die Erfahrung von Sound zu einem
Gesamtkunstwerk.
Das Panorama wurde im Juli 2007 eroeffnet.
